What is Gigapixel Photography?

Gigapixel photography involves creating ultra-high-resolution images by stitching together multiple photographs. The result is an image that contains billions of pixels, allowing viewers to zoom in and explore the finest details without losing clarity.

Applications include:

  • Cultural and Heritage Projects: Documenting museums, artworks, and historical sites with unparalleled accuracy.
  • Marketing Campaigns: Creating interactive content that captivates audiences and showcases your brand.
  • Events and Exhibitions: Providing immersive visuals for trade shows, galleries, and digital experiences.
  • Large-Scale Documentation: Capturing expansive landscapes or detailed overviews of complex environments.

Questions? We have the answers.

What’s the definition of a gigapixel?

A gigapixel image has over one billion pixels, making it incredibly detailed. For context, a regular HD photo has about 2 million pixels. That means gigapixel photos are hundreds of times sharper, perfect for capturing even the tiniest details.

Are gigapixel images always over a billion pixels?

The exact size depends on the scene and number of images used in stitching. The size will vary to meet the client’s objective.

How many pixels can be achieved in a single image?

There are many factors that affect how large and detailed a gigapixel image can be. Using a long lens with a high-resolution camera can dramatically increase the final pixel count. For example, one record-breaking gigapixel image used an 800mm equivalent lens setup and took 35 hours to shoot, with stitching taking around two months.

While pushing limits is exciting, we believe quality matters most. Our focus is on creating images that are beautifully composed, razor-sharp at 100% zoom, and completely free of stitching errors or ghosting.

What resolution should I aim for?

It depends on your project goals. We’ll help you choose a resolution that suits your brief without overcomplicating the shoot. For example, capturing a 5-gigapixel rooftop scene might require dozens of exposures in perfect light-something tricky at twilight or night when lighting changes quickly. Sometimes, the best approach is to aim for slightly lower resolution to take advantage of better, more dramatic light. For certain projects, we also use our 151MP Phase One medium format system to get exceptional detail with fewer exposures.

How are gigapixel images captured?

We mount the camera on a tripod with a special panoramic head, which lets it rotate precisely around the lens’s nodal point. We take many overlapping photos of the scene from that single position. Then, in post-production, we stitch all those shots together seamlessly to create one incredibly detailed gigapixel image.Panorama showing how photographs are shot in rows and columbs to make a stitched giapixel

What are the best lighting conditions for gigapixel photography?

Consistent lighting is key. Ideally, we want every exposure to match closely. Sunny days with steady light or overcast skies work well because they avoid changing shadows and brightness. If it’s sunny with patchy clouds, we often have to pause and wait for clear skies. Twilight can produce more dramatic, beautiful results, but because the light changes quickly, we need to limit the number of exposures to keep the shoot within a 15-20 minute window

Can you capture gigapixel images with movement or action in the scene?

Yes, with the right planning, it’s definitely possible. We usually capture the entire scene first, then focus extra attention on the areas with movement to make sure they look natural. In some cases, we’ll even use multiple camera setups to handle complex action smoothly. Below are a couple of examples shot at Fulham FC’s Craven Cottage Ground on match day.blank

Will a gigapixel image load quickly online?

Yes! Gigapixel images are prepared for the web by slicing them into many small, multi-resolution tiles. As you zoom and pan, only the tiles you need are loaded on demand. This makes viewing smooth and efficient, without using up unnecessary bandwidth.

What can gigapixel photography be used for?

Gigapixel photography is perfect for marketing campaigns, heritage documentation, large-scale landscapes, interactive digital experiences and online treasure hunts.

What’s an online treasure hunt?

This is where something tiny is hidden within the image. We’ve created these for brands like M&S where we had fairies hidden within the London skyline, and for Celebrity Cruises, where users had to find the hidden code within European cityscapes. These campaigns generate massive customer engagement with talk on socials as well as competition entries.

Can a gigapixel image be used within a virtual tour?

Absolutely. We’ve done this for a number of clients such as galleries, museums and other cultural heritage organisations where they wanted an element within the 360 to be shown in super resolution, allowing their users to really zoom in and see the detail.

Can they be printed at large-scale?

We’ve provided images that have been reproduced at huge scale – over 30 metres wide at Gatwick, over 40m wide at Waterloo. They’ve been used for giant OOH posters, exhibition graphics and hoardings, as well as office decor.

Can I see examples of your gigapixel images?

Absolutely – we have lots of examples available. Here’s just one cityscape example to get started with, but please ask us and we’ll be happy to direct you to others relevant to you.
